I seem to have a problem with Mediacorp, Singapore. Ever since we ended our brief working relationship back in 1990 (I was a child actor back then… … u never knew right???), our viewer-broadcaster relationship has been rather sour.
Despite SPH Mediaworks’ brief existence for 3 years managed to give the general public fresh ideas and innovative shows, the media war ended given financial constraints and problems such as our population size.
These days, we are once again left with one TV program provider, and a host of (forgive me, but…) sub-standards Local English comedies, Taiwanese Variety show re-runs, and drop-dead boring conversation contents in our dramas.
However, the biggest problem I think is the overwhelming amount of charity shows which we have every year. The Ren Ci Charity Show, NKF (both local and foreign performance) show, President Star Charity, Cancer Foundation Show, and most recently last weekend’s The Affairs of the Heart show. Last counted, we probably have a charity show every month / or 2 shows every 3 months. The all-so-familiar 1900 --- ---- numbers to donate, colourful (sometime distasteful) costumes, has-been or some really old singers from overseas, stunts after stunts after stunts, and the famous prompting hand signal to make your donation calls.
Personally, I do enjoy certain stunts and performances, however, some are done in my opinion, painful and unpleasant to watch. Memorable stunts included Zoe Tay’s “Queen of Gamblers”, Bryan Wong’s and Xie ShaoGuang’s car stunts, and Ming Yi Reverend’s descend from Suntec City Tower. However, some acts are done, so that artistes have to endure pain / bruises / injuries / unneeded risks that perhaps should not have occurred at all. Take for instance, the bare muscles pulling act by 5 male artistes, is it really necessary? And do the audiences actually enjoy it??
I guess, sooner rather than later, all of us will get very tired of these performances. The appeal of such shows would probably drop, and calls will probably get lesser and lesser. New ideas have to be introduced to make fund-raising events appealing again. My views, maybe some kind of artiste and fans interaction event, like stars playing games or something, would be more engaging than trying to pull a motor vehicle with bare muscles. And singers like 5566, Jay Chou and Jolie Tsai are more than capable to sing their tunes and get more phone calls from their fans.
I sincerely hope that this overwhelming amount of charity shows should at least see a change in how the performances are planned and presented.

Stunts like this light bulb one is still entertaining and exciting, but should artistes like Terence Ong, suffer like this?

We always enjoy good dancing and music, dun we?

These performances are alright, but the costumes... ...
